PRO-CAL WINS 2020 PROJECT EXCELLENCE AWARD FROM NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION

Work on Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel Lobby Wall will be Honored During NECA 2020 LIVE Virtual Convention

Pro-Cal Lighting, an electrical contractor based in Vista, CA, was recently recognized by the National Electrical Contractors Association with a NECA Project Excellence Award in Design Build Under $1 Million Category for Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel Lobby Wall.

NECA established the Project Excellence Award to showcase the exceptional work that its members perform throughout the country. Pro-Cal Lighting will be recognized along with this year’s other winners during NECA 2020 LIVE, the association’s virtual convention and trade show.

“Our work in lighting has transformed locations into destinations, and our team of designers and electricians understand how they are shining a brighter light on our communities through these installations. Being recognized by the National Electrical Contractors Association for our work at the Hilton Bayfront in San Diego helps validate the amazing work we are doing in our industry and inspires us to take on the next lighting challenge with confidence.” – Brian Morales, President & CEO

The Hilton San Diego Bayfront’s iconic lobby glass wall is comprised of over 200 glass panels, each weighing 100 pounds, and it now features over 9,000 individually addressable cloud connected RGB diodes. The glass wall reaches a total height of 16 feet and had once featured over 2,300 linear feet of traditional cold cathode. The north, east, south, and west elevations were backlit by the traditional cold cathode lighting, designed in linear runs from floor to ceiling. The solution chosen by Pro-Cal Lighting incorporated a “panel for panel” design. The team prefabricated aluminum sheets punched, and powder coated that would serve as the mounting mechanism for the product of choice, Signify’s Color Kinetics Flex LMX Gen 2 RGB strands. Over 10,000 reducing washers were used as a means to fasten the nodes to the panel.

The lobby is a central meeting point for the 1,190 guest rooms, and events are happening daily and nightly, therefore the space needed to be worked on in sections and during graveyard. As each section was completed overnight, the newly installed section was programmed each morning to match the existing cold cathode system. Electrically, the existing installation needed to remain powered while new sections were being placed.

The Hilton has achieved over 70% energy savings and now can utilize their maintenance budget for other parts of the hotel.

Currently the Hilton has the ability to remotely control, schedule, and monitor the wall by means of a mobile application. Furthermore, they have taken the step to take on a pilot program that will allow tourists and convention goers to select their favorite color or light show to be played on the light wall by use of their mobile device. This is a one of a kind system that will drive business to the San Diego Hilton Bayfront.

The project is an incredible story that blends the narrative of energy efficiency, dynamic lighting, and cloud connectivity that allows Hilton to save money and potentially monetize a state-of-the-art lighting system.
